Sangomar field (formerly SNE)

This field is the 1st oil discovery offshore Senegal and one of the world’s biggest oil discoveries in the last 10 years.

Sangomar field (formerly SNE)

The Sangomar field, containing both oil and gas, located 100 km offshore to the south of Dakar, is within the Sangomar Deep Offshore permit area.
  • Discovered in 2014
  • Located 2 km below the seabed floor
  • Spread over 400 km2, in water depths of 700-1400 m
The Development and Exploitation Plan for the Sangomar Field offshore Senegal was submitted to the Government of Senegal by the joint venture late 2019 with the exploitation authorisation issued in January 2020. First oil production is targeted in 2023.

The Phase 1 of the $4.2 billion Sangomar project would develop 230 million barrels, at a production capacity of 100,000 barrels a day.

Participating Interest:
  • Australian Woodside (operator) 31.89%
  • PETROSEN 18%
  • FAR Ltd 13.67%
  • Cairn Energy Senegal 36.44%
Phase 1 of the development will target oil reserves from the lower reservoirs and an initial pilot phase in the upper reservoirs. Over the life of the field, total recoverable oil reserves of are estimated to be ~500mmbbls with the development also including plans to export gas to shore for the domestic market.

The Sangomar Field will be developed using a conventional (and often utilised) development concept with subsea production and injection wells tied back to a standard floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel.

In July 2020 Russian Lukoil signed an agreement with Cairn Energy to acquire a 40% interest in the Sangomar, Rufisque and Sangomar Deep project for $300 million. In August 2020 Woodside has blocked Cairn's stake sale to Lukoil, by exercising its pre-emption rights.
