The large Dovletabad field located in Mary province was discovered in 1982 with initial gas reserves of 1.3 trillion cubic meters. In the 1990s this field was the main source of gas export of Turkmenistan.
It was considered to be the largest gas field in Turkmenistan until thorough evaluation of reserves at a newly discovered Yolotan field were made public.
Currently, natural gas produced at the field is sent both to domestic consumers and for export supplies. In the 1st quarter of 2020, Turkmenistan as a whole exported more than 9 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
Turkmenistan exports natural gas to China and Russia. Further diversification of gas exports will be ensured by the implementation of the project for the construction of the transnational gas pipeline Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India. The raw material source for this route will be the giant Galkynysh field.
