Phase I project of Uzbekistan’s Karakul gas field becomes operational

The ceremony was held in Bukhara, Uzbekistan to celebrate the commissioning of the 1st phase of Karakul gas fields, a project funded and implemented jointly by CNPC and Uzbekneftegaz, Chinese CNPC reported on December 7, 2017.

The project covers 3 gas fields: Dengizkul, Khojadavlat and Sharky Alat, with a maximum design annual output of 1 billion cubic meters.

The commissioning of the project will deepen natural gas cooperation between China and Uzbekistan, and will be of great significance to promoting economic development in Uzbekistan.

Phase one of the Karakul block in southern Bukhara province would be able to pump 1 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas a year to China though the Central-Asian pipeline grid, CNPC said, though it did not say when the supply would start.

CNPC has been involved in oil and gas operations in Uzbekistan since 2006 and now has oil and gas assets and equity in the country, while also providing oilfield services.

Chinese customs data showed China imported 1.84 million tonnes of gas from Uzbekistan in the 1st 10 months of 2017, or about 2.54 bcm.
