Pipeline Spills Fuel In S.F. Bay In California

A petroleum pipeline in the San Francisco Bay area has been broken, flowing out diesel fuel into a marsh for migratory birds and prompting an emergency cleanup effort Thursday.
It has already spilled 1 million gallons of diesel fuel into Suisun Bay, which feeds into San Francisco Bay.
But a state environmental official said the amount of fuel spilled could be significantly lower. Officials said the exact amount would not be known until the pipe is fixed and refilled.
The spill was spread over about 300 yards in the marsh, Dana Michaels, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Fish and Game said.
Emergency response teams are trying to clean up as much of the spill as possible in the area about 25 miles northeast of San Francisco.
Kinder Morgan, the owner of the pipeline, noticed a drop in pipeline pressure around 6 p.m. Tuesday night and shut down that section of the pipeline, said Dana Michaels, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Fish and Game.
State and federal agencies were notified of the spill Wednesday.
