Members who used a0577, BC-Oil Rig Fire, and subsequent writethrus sent April 12 under a Carlsbad, N.M., dateline, are asked to use the following story.
The Associated Press, relying on information supplied by state police, erroneously reported April 12 that a product stored near an oil rig fire was a hazardous chemical. The AP also misspelled the product's name.
It is Magma Fiber, not magnafiber, a fibrous substance made from melted rock. It is not hazardous. Authorities described the substance as hazardous because they feared Magma Fiber vapors, if mixed with chemicals at the fire, could become dangerous, said state police Sgt. D.L. Kiper, a hazardous materials officer.
