Zayed Centre marks two years of efforts to build Arab solidarity

The Zayed Centre for Coordination and Follow-Up will host a senior Arab League official in a lecture to be held tomorrow to mark the centre's second anniversary.

Talaat Hamid, Advisor to the Arab League Secretary General, will deliver a lecture on the Arab League Ministerial Council resolution, which culminated in the inception of the Zayed Centre a couple of years ago,

In view of the significant contributions made by the Zayed Centre to the intellectual and cultural life within the UAE as well as in the larger Arab world, Hamid will highlight the Arab league vision, which the Centre is trying to get across through its host of activities.

The Zayed Centre was initially set up as a pragmatic response to the dream of Arab solidarity, as envisioned by President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

In order to translate this vision into reality, Arab delegates who were participating in the symposium on the Future of the Arab World and the Role of the Arab League, which was held in Abu Dhabi from November 2-4, 1997, agreed to adopt measures to reinforce Arab solidarity, and thereby strengthen the Arab league position in the international arena.

The symposium, which was presided over by Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, agreed on the need for a body which will undertake the task of highlighting crucial Arab issues, either in the form of publications or through regular conferences, lectures or symposiums.

Over the last couple of years, the Centre has been focusing on its major objective: fomenting inter-Arab solidarity politically, economically, socially and culturally.

The Centre also sees its role as contributing to the formulation of a common Arab strategy in the face of current global challenges.

Other areas of activities include reinforcement of an Arab identity, promotion of the unity of its member states and enhancement of cooperation with regional and international organisations.
The Centre has so far published 84 publications on a wide range of topics and also hosted international figures, statesmen, academics, writers and political commentators.

Among the prominent figures that ware hosted were former U.S. president Jimmy Carter and FAO Director General, Jacques Diouff, and Somali President, Abdul Qadir Salad.

Some 73 lectures on various topics have also been held in the Centre since March this year.
Former UN Secretary General and President of Austria, Kurt Waldheim, is scheduled to deliver a lecture in the Centre later next month.

The Centre is also in the process of publishing two journals - the first one will concern itself with scientific issues, while the other will concern itself with current political events around the world. Eminent political figures will be invited to contribute in the two journals.

As a token of gratitude and allegiance to Sheikh Zayed for its commitment and dedication to his own country as well as to his greater Arab Nation, the Zayed Centre published a biographical encyclopaedia depicting the life of the president and also highlighting the major landmarks of his leadership.

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the accession of Sheikh Zayed, the Centre organised an exhibition of rare photographs depicting the ascendancy of His Highness to power as well as the major sign posts of his life.

The activities conducted by the Centre since its inception won it a trophy of recognition and appreciation from former Arab League secretary general, Esmat Abdul Majid. The trophy was awarded to Sheikh Sultan.
