Russian PM Believes His Country Can Manage Crisis With Minimal Costs

Russia has every chance of making it through the crisis with minimal losses, both in the economic and social spheres, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said in his annual question-and-answer broadcast on Thursday.

Russian PM Believes His Country Can Manage Crisis With Minimal Costs

Russia faced far greater troubles in the 1990s, when its territorial integrity was challenged, and industry and social system collapsed. “Today, the country is in much better shape," he emphasized, at the same time noting that the current crisis “will be a difficult period for the world economy as well as ours,” and urging Russian citizens to be prepared in moral, organizational, economic and political terms.

Putin said the government would not give up its planned social programs. “All that we planned in the social sphere, including higher social benefits and pensions, will be implemented,” he stated.

There are no plans to revise any programs, including investment programs involving Russia’s largest companies, the reform of the housing and utilities sector, the healthcare system, mandatory medical insurance, and education and pension reforms, according to Putin.

Those who have already lost their jobs will receive increased unemployment benefits of up to RUB 4,900 ($175) a month, Putin said, also calling on companies, municipal and regional authorities to take urgent measures to save jobs wherever possible and re-train personnel. Among other things, he recommended that authorities send personnel to the areas where it was most needed, like in infrastructure construction projects.

There are resources to finance such projects, Putin stressed, pointing out road funds, Russian Railways and some other large companies. Agencies providing employment services should receive additional allocations, he believes.
