Two new coal-fired power units – STU-660 at the Troitsk SDPP and STU-330 at the Novocherkassk SDPP – were put into operation on June 30, 2016 during the annual General Shareholders Meeting of Gazprom.

The total installed capacity of the new power units is around 1 GW.

The meeting participants communicated with Denis Fyodorov, Director General of Gazprom Energoholding who was at the Novocherkassk SDPP, and Denis Bashuk, Director General of OGK-2 who was at the Troitsk SDPP, via a video call.

The newly commissioned power units will enhance the reliability of power grids in southern Russia and the Ural District, as well as increase Gazprom Group’s competitiveness in the electric power and capacity markets. The cutting-edge equipment provides for substantial fuel savings and significant reductions in environmental load during power generation.

Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, congratulated Gazprom shareholders and Gazprom Group’s generating companies on the commissioning of important generating facilities.

The Novocherkassk SDPP is located in the Rostov Region, eight kilometers away from Novocherkassk. It is a part of the Unified Energy System of southern Russia. The plant’s power units were put onstream between 1965 and 1972. Coal produced in the Rostov area of the Donetsk coal basin serves as the main fuel for the SDPP. The STU-330 power unit (330 MW in capacity) of the Novocherkassk SDPP was the first high-powered coal-fired generating facility in Russia to use the circulating fluidized bed technology. The advantage of this technology is its high environmental performance combined with low fuel quality requirements.

The Troitsk SDPP is located in the Chelyabinsk Region, eight kilometers away from Troitsk. It operates as part of the Unified Energy System of the Ural District. The plant was constructed between 1960 and 1976. It uses coal produced in the Ekibastuz coal basin. The STU-660 power unit (660 MW in capacity) was created in partnership with advanced power equipment manufacturers.

The Novocherkassk and Troitsk SDPPs are the subsidiaries of the OGK-2 generating company, which is part of Gazprom Energoholding Group. The Group also includes such generating companies as Mosenergo and TGC-1.

Since its entry into the power industry in 2007, Gazprom Group has executed, among other things, a number of projects to develop its state-of-the-art gas-fired power generation infrastructure, as well as commissioned six combined cycle power units in OGK-2, seven in Mosenergo, and four in TGC-1. In addition, TGC-1 implemented eight projects for equipment upgrading at hydropower plants.
