PGNiG not interested in renewing Gazprom gas deal

Warsaw, November 18 - Neftegaz.RU. Poland's PGNiG has officially notified Gazprom that it will not renew the Yamal Contract after December 31, 2022. Poland and Russia entered into a contract for the purchase and sale of natural gas in 1996.

Poland plans to rely on lLNG imports from the United States and Qatar, as well as natural gas imports from Norway, once its deal with Gazprom expires. Poland currently satisfies 25 % of its domestic demand from its own gas fields, with the majority of its supply coming from Gazprom.

The development of a gasport in Świnoujście on Poland’s Baltic coast opened in 2016, and now being extended, has changed the game. The 2nd building block in Poland’s strategy is the building of the Baltic Pipe to link up to supplies from Norwegian fields in the North Sea via Denmark due to start before the end of 2019.

“In line with the Poland’s aspiration to achieve security of energy supplies and seeking to deliver the PGNiG’s current strategy, over the past 4 years we have taken a number of important steps to diversify the sources of gas supply to Poland. We have concluded long-term LNG supply contracts and have been acquiring natural gas deposits on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, which, combined with the activities of the transmission system operator to expand the gas pipeline system, makes it possible for us to terminate the Yamal Contract on the originally set date,” said Piotr Woźniak, CEO of PGNiG.
