Vladimir Putin to visit Hungary on October 30

Budapest, September 30 - Neftegaz.RU. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed a visit to Budapest by Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 30

"During President Putin's visit to Budapest, Hungary and Russia will sign some cooperation agreements, the main topics between the 2 parties will cover natural gas and nuclear power (NPP) issues.

The expansion of Hungary's only NPP Paks (127 km south of Budapest), will also be part of the talks. The Paks NPP is being developed with the help of Russia's Rosatom. One third of the Hungary's demand for electricity was provided by imports, mainly through the purchase of electricity produced at coal stations in the neighbouring countries. Therefore, the Paks-2 NPP project has the key importance not only in terms of achieving climate goals, but also in reducing import dependence.

Russia earlier agreed to top up Hungaryʼs gas reserves this year with gas it will need for next year as the expiration of a transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine loomed.

"Russia has proven a reliable partner - Hungary, which depends on Russian natural gas imports, has already received the full amount necessary for this coming winter's supply and next year's gas supply is also assured," the Hungarian government announced on its official website in a statement.

On the subject of Putin’s upcoming visit to Hungary, Gergely Gulyas, Head of the Prime Minister’s Office, said at his regular press conference that PM Viktor Orbán and Putin routinely met once a year. “Hungary seeks good relations with all world powers, while Russia is also an important business partner,” he added.

In 2018, Gazprom supplied to Hungary 7.6 billion cu m of gas, an increase of 9.3 % (7 billion cu m) from 2017. Gazprom deliveries of gas to Hungary between January 1 and June 5, 2019, totaled 4.3 bln cubic meters, a 57.5% increase over the corresponding period a year earlier.
