Naftogaz CEO: Russia may set up another gas crisis

Naftogaz CEO: Russia may set up another gas crisis

Kiev, April 17 - Neftegaz.RU.
CEO of Naftogaz of Ukraine Andriy Kobolyev says Russia may set up another gas crisis and completely halt Russian gas transit via Ukraine in 2020, Unian reported.

"The fact that Nord Stream 2 will not be launched on January 1 of next year is obvious, and everyone is ready for this. For Russians, this is probably even an opportunity. And in my opinion, they are trying to take advantage of the fact that Nord Stream 2 is non-operating. This way, they could set up another gas crisis, it is very much in their style," he told TSN.ua on April 17.

Kobolyev says the Russians are now trying to do everything possible to thwart the signing of the gas transit contract with Ukraine. "I believe that this scenario is most likely if the contract has not been signed by that time. The Russians are doing everything possible so that there is no agreement, in order to blackmail Europe. The gas crisis is their standard move in such situations," the CEO added.

According to Kobolyev, it is therefore important that Ukraine be properly prepared for the next heating season, increasing its additional gas reserves. The official earlier said that trilateral gas talks "Ukraine-EU-Russia" might take place immediately after the presidential elections in Ukraine.
