Ukrainian PM hopes for lower gas prices after Stockholm arbitration decision

According to Ukrainian Iterfax, Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said on March 1, 2018, that he hopes for a reduction in gas prices after the decision by the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce.

«I think that the arbitration court’s decision will help Naftogaz reduce the cost of the transit itself. I think that this will help Naftogaz search for lower gas prices, which can influence the price reduction inside the country,» Groysman said.

He noted that in Ukraine it was necessary to approach the formation of the gas price very sensitively. «My goal is to create a transparent market at all stages: production, transportation and supply for the population. Nobody can have any monopoly positions,» Groysman added.

The Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce obliged Russia’s Gazprom to pay $4.63 billion to Naftogaz for the failure to meet gas transit obligations.

Since the court previously ordered Naftogaz to pay Gazprom for gas supply arrears, Gazprom’s net payment after 2 arbitration disputes between the 2 companies on gas supplies and transit shipments will be $2.56 billion.

Naftogaz plans to announce decisions on the remaining issues in the dispute later since the arbitration court’s decision on the transit contract exceeds 800 pages.
