Iranian Shana reported on August 22, 2016, that the project to product gas odorant has made 90% progress at phase I of the South Pars Gas Field, says Planning Director of the National Iranian Gas Company Hassan Montazer Torbati, adding the project will end a French and Russian monopoly in production of the item.
In a visit to Asslouyeh, southern Iran, Hassan Montazer Torbati said the project will presently come on-stream and will turn Iran into a producer of the item.
Gas odorant is produced from gas condensate and its product is nearly ready.
Iran imports 600,000 tons of the item from France annually but once the facility is ready, Iran will become an exporter of the product, he said.
The plant can process 800,000 tons of gas odorant annually.
An odorizer is a device that adds an odorant to a gas. The most common type is one that adds a mercaptan liquid into natural gas distribution systems so that leaks can be readily detected. Other types have been used for carbon dioxide fire extinguishers.
