Jordan's state-run Aqaba Thermal Power Plant will soon begin using natural gas as fuel instead of oil as at present.
The technical procedures required for switching to gas will be completed at the end of this month or at the beginning of the next. The transformation of the power pant involved the construction of a $1 billion pipeline from Egypt's offshore gas field Al Arish to Aqaba.
Aqaba plant currently produces 650 megawatts of electricity and represents about 43% of Jordan's total generating capacity of 1,500 megawatts.
