With the huge increase in oil prices in 2004-05, the petroleum industry, as well as other economic sectors, in the Middle East has been experiencing a real euphoria, with large investments in every aspect of the energy chain combined with significant business and major project opportunities.
This is also true for the booming natural gas industry in the Middle East, which has proved to be an important source of supply of an increasingly vital fuel and feedstock for both local and international markets. On the domestic scene, the region is experiencing new upstream development aimed at finding, developing and producing increasing volumes of gas, while implementing innovative ways of locally using this gas, especially for domestic, commercial (urban use) and transport applications (CNG).
However, only exports to the major consuming zones will allow the full utilisation and valorisation of the huge gas reserves of the Middle East. In addition for pipeline projects, aimed at fulfilling demand in regional and inter-regional markets, key gas players in the region are aggressively moving to become large LNG exporters, if not the largest exporters, at a time when demand for LNG in almost every part of the world is expected to soar within the coming years.
Meanwhile, another technology, Gas-To-Liquids (GTL) used to produce liquid fuels from gas reserves, have started to bear fruit in the region. Our host country Qatar, is even hoping to become the GTL World Capital? with not less than five projects that are either under construction or planned.
