Nigeria Labour Congress Supports Strikers

The Nigeria Labour Congress yesterday declared its support for the planed nationwide strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria over an alleged plan by Mobil Oil Nigeria (MON) Plc to sack its members including the national treasurer of the union and all the branch executive officers.

The union had threatened to paralyse activities in the nation's upstream sectors as from Wednesday if the management of Mobil Oil Nigeria (MON) failed to reverse its planned sack of the workers.

In a telephone chat with LEADERSHIP, NLC Deputy Secretary General, Mr. Olaitan Onyerinde called on the management of Mobil Oil to exploit all avenues of dialogue by stopping the victimisation of the workers so as to avert the planned nationwide strike.

According to him, "We will support them because the strike is all about the termination of appointment of about 61 of their members and so we will ensure they get the necessary backing they required to make the action a successful one."

He said the demand of the union is legal as the management of Mobil Oil Nigeria (MON) Plc breaches and violates labour laws and the ILO convention contrary to the fundamental human right of the workers which were clearly stated in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, allAfrica reported.
