Gold Fields Eyes Collaboration With Russian Gold Firm

South African gold producer Gold Fields? CEO Ian Cockerill said that it?s favourable for the company to have some form of co-operation between Gold Fields and Polyus, the gold production unit of Russian metals giant Norilsk Nickel.

Norilsk Nickel owns 20% of Gold Fields. The two companies have said previously they are exploring ways to work together on some of Norilsk?s assets.

But there is no proposal at this stage that requires Gold Fields to publish a cautionary notice to its shareholders.

Last year Gold Fields proposed selling its international assets to Canadian gold producer IAMGold, with which it has partnerships in the Tarkwa and Damang mines in Ghana, but the proposal was narrowly defeated by a shareholder vote because of hostile bid of Gold Fields's domestic rival Harmony Gold.
