Poland could be gas distribution hub for Central Europe: Deputy PM

By partnering up with the United States, Poland has a chance to be independent of Russia in terms of gas supplies and to be a distribution hub for Central Europe in the future, Polish Deputy Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said, polish media reported on July 7, 2017.

Morawiecki, who is also Poland’s development and finance minister, said he had spoken about issues including gas supplies with President Donald Trump and his advisers during the US leader’s visit to Warsaw on Thursday.

«Through our cooperation with the US, we have the chance to be not only independent of Russia... in terms of gas, but also to help Ukraine and to be a gas distribution hub for Central Europe in 5, 10 years,» Morawiecki said.

He added that gas bought by Poland from the US would certainly be cheaper.

«Thanks to our policy of diversifying sources of supply, we have a chance for much better gas prices, but also for a safer Europe,» Morawiecki said.

Polish President Andrzej Duda voiced hoped after meeting Trump on Thursday that a long-term contract would soon be signed for the supply of American LNG to Poland.

Last month Poland received its 1st one-off consignment of LNG from the US and is eyeing a contract for more deliveries as it looks to diversify its supplies and reduce dependence on Russia.
