Southern Illinois co-op seeks to revamp coal-fired plant

Washington, 23Mar2001

A proposal from Southern Illinois Power Cooperative to construct a coal-burning boiler that uses advanced technology at its Marion, Ill., facility will be scrutinized as part of hearing April 18 on the utility?s application to the state to recondition the plant. The changes would increase the station capacity by 21 mw and significantly cut sulfur and nitrogen releases. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) will conduct a public meeting in Marion to collect comments and answer questions about the agency?s proposal to grant construction permits for the plant modifications. Southern Illinois Power wants to launch three projects to revamp the Marion facility, which has four coal-fired generating units that burn a blend of coal and coal refuse.
