The Italian government and private companies will have to invest between Eur3-bil and Eur14-bil to produce cleaner power to comply with the Kyoto agreement.
There are four technological and investment scenarios with different reductions of surplus carbon dioxide. Under the least expensive Eur3-bil option, Italy would substitute a total of 4,748MW by converting oil, gas and coal plants to cogeneration, combined- cycle and renewable plants. Under the most expensive Eur14-bil scenario, 23,573MW would be substituted with new plants.
Italy must cut emissions by 6.5% by 2012 with respect to 1990 levels.
