1000 tons of crude oil are leaking from a cargo ship into the Caspian Sea.
Specially-equipped vessels had been scrambled to clean up an oil slick which is 15 kilometers long and eight kilometers wide.
According to the latest official information, the Mercury was carrying 15 railway wagons each containing about 60 tons of crude oil.
Mercury may have sunk because of poor condition as since January the ship has been using only one of its two motors.
40 people were missing and feared drowned after the Mercury, traveling from Aktau in Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, sank in stormy seas Tuesday morning. Among them two Russians and two Kazakh citizens, the rest of the victims were Azerbaijan nationals. Nine people were plucked from the water Tuesday no one else has been found alive since then.
