Japanese Environment Ministry and some 30 firms will test-run a global-warming gas market.
30 companies, mostly from the manufacturing sector, will set their own maximum emission levels for a year and trade the amount they find in excess or in shortage online.
In the new market, firms will be able to sell their right to emissions if they succeed in reducing global warming gas by saving energy or introducing a new energy source.
Those that emit beyond levels they are allowed to, however, must purchase the right to emit the excess amount from other market participants.
Such gas market has already been adopted in Britain and Denmark. It has been used as a means to reduce the countries' overall levels of emissions while at the same time curtailing costs.
