More sludge from the major oil spill from the tanker Prestige washed ashore yesterday.
As it became known the tahker shouldn?t have been allowed to sail even as radar and anti-collision equipment was not working.
As fresh batches of oil came ashore in previously unaffected stretches of coast, residents became increasingly anxious about their livelihoods.
It also extended a ban on fishing and shellfish harvesting that was declared last Saturday when oil from the tanker?s first leak reached land. The widest ban now covers more than 186 miles of Galicia coastline from Ferrol south to Ribeiro.
Fishing and canning is a major industry in the region, worth more than ё200 million a year. Tourism is also important. Both could be hard-hit.
Portugal has been spared, so far, and winds from the south were projected for the next two days to keep pushing the slicks north toward Spain, and perhaps southern France.
