An oil giant Royal Dutch...
An oil giant Royal Dutch/Shell will meet a $1.5 billion bill because of its activities in Nigeria. $500 million of that bill it is to pay immediately. The remaining amount will be paid in 10 installments.
The charge stems from a petition filed in December 2000 by Nigeria's Ijaw tribe, which demanded Shell pay for "the harmful impact of its oil production and exploration activities for over 60 years."
Nigeria is the world's seventh-largest oil exporter, producing just over 2 million barrels of oil per day.
