For the first time in a decade, Canada's greenhouse gas emissions declined in 2001, although the economy was growing. The modest 1.3 per cent decrease is seen as a turning point because of a simultaneous economic growth of 1.4 per cent.
This shows that economic growth does not require increased energy use.
However, under the Kyoto accord which was ratified last December, Canada still faces the challenge to reduce greenhouse gases to 6 per cent below the level of 1990 by 2012.
