General Motors Corp is to test and supply a fuel cell system to power a Dow Chemical Co. plant in Texas. The cells will supply 35 megawatts of power a year, enough for 25,000 homes, making it the largest fuel cell deal to date.
The deal is expected to be finalized this year and should help GM to further decrease the production cost, making fuel cells economically more viable.
Fuel cells create electricity by mixing hydrogen with oxygen The only byproduct is water, therefore avoiding the greenhouse gases and pollutants that other power sources emit.
