China is planning to replace coal with natural gas as its top energy source in order to pull off a greener Olympics in 2008.
The government has approved a series of investments in power plants fueled by natural gas rather than coal.
There is a plan among the projects, to build a natural gas electricity plant four to five kilometers (2.5 to 3.1 miles) from the Olympic Green that will replace 40 existing heating supply stations fired by coal, the paper said.
"When the project is finished and goes into operation, the condition of the air in the Olympic Green area will be greatly improved," said Chai Xiaozhong, vice director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform.
Beijing also wants more efficient energy use and targeting buildings.The solution will be to introduce "intelligent" technologies in the form of automatic controls.
