Ecuadorian Indians sues an oil giant -- ChevronTexaco ? for environmental damage in the Amazon jungle.
It is estimated that the damage will cost $6 billion. The company is also accused in evasion from cleaning up the nature.
Texaco Inc subcidiary, which merged with Chevron in 2001, dumped 18.5 billion gallons of oil-laden water into jungle rivers during operations in the Andean nation from 1972 to 1992. They say river and groundwater pollution has made people sick and damaged crops.
A trial began a week ago in superior court of jungle city Lago Agrio, some 180 km northeast of Quito in the lawsuit filed by representatives for 30,000 jungle dwellers against the US oil giant.
