Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Patrick Manning announced the cut-in of the BHP Billiton Trinidad and Tobago Kairi I platform, costing US$4.5 million, the first locally constructed offshore oil drilling platform.
The Kairi I platform, complete with helipad and weighing 550 tons, was built by Damus Ltd at the La Brea Industrial Development Company Ltd industrial estate. It was taken out to sea last Wednesday and positioned off the north coast of Trinidad for the production of oil and gas from the Angostura Field.
"It is a red-letter day for the development at both the upstream and downstream levels in the industry," Patrick Manning said, quoted Trinidad Express.
Nigel Smith, president of BHP Billiton Trinidad and Tobago, said to the audience in the launching ceremonies "This platform will make the kind of sustainable contribution this country deserves from us."
