American oil company ChevronTexaco plans to "respond rapidly" to the US government lifting economic sanctions against Libya.
The company has already held talks with Libyan officials to "understand the opportunities that may exist there," a ChevronTexaco representative said Tuesday.
The Bush administration was rumored to set to lift sanctions against Libya this week, a move that would open the North African country to investment by US energy companies after an 18-year absence.
"We look forward to the full opening of Libya for all international investors," the ChevronTexaco spokesman said. He also confirmed the company participated in a trade conference in Tripoli this week. The US lifting of sanctions would also permit US companies to directly purchase oil from Libya, though Tripoli would remain on the US' list of countries involved in state-sponsored terrorism.
