South African gold producer Harmony Gold said that 1, 830 employees could be affected by the suspension of its continuous operations in its Free State operations.
The company is in talks with the National Union of Mineworkers on the issue. Harmony said in early January that the union rejected plans for continuous operations, including working on Sundays.
Harmony said the additional 1,830 employment positions had been created during the past year with moves towards continuous operations at its sites in South Africa's Free State province. The company intends to shift all its mines to continual operations, and informed Gold Fields? shareholders about its strategy in order to persuade them to accept its hostile takeover offer, because it could cut Gold Fields' costs better than its current management.
Harmony says boosting working days per year to 353 from the current 272 might save 5-8 percent of costs.
