US Oil Majors Eye Russian Gas Field

Russia?s President Vladimir Putin met on Wednesday three executives of the top three U.S. oil firms, ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco and ConocoPhillips. They were discussing their boosting business in Russia.

The meeting was held during Putin?s visit to New York for the United Nations? summit.

All three U.S. firms are bidding to participate in the development of the huge Barents Sea Shtokman gas field, a license to which is held by Russia?s natural gas monopoly Gazprom.

Extracting gas form the field, these companies would be able to deliver significant volumes of liquefied natural gas to the US for half a century.

Gazprom said it will disclose a short-list of five bidders for Shtokman out of nine contenders today, on 16th of September.
