ENI, BP Eye Takeover of Repsol

Italy's oil and gas major ENI and Britain's BP are considering takeover bids for Spanish firm Repsol after a recent decline in the company's stock price has made it a ripe trading target, newspaper El Mundo reported on Monday.

Following the report, the share price of Repsol-YPF in Madrid surged 3.64 percent to 23.06 euros.

In addition to the two European energy peers, ExxonMobil was also studying the possibility of making a bid, said the newspaper,citing market sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Any possible takeover bidder will not have to seek permission from the Spanish government, as its golden share in the energy group has expired, said the report
