Us light, sweet crude for June delivery rose sharply to $US1.40 at $US66.46 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Brent crude settled US76 cents higher at $US68.41 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.
Petrol futures settled up US7.1 cents on the Nymex at $US2.3613 after falling earlier.
