The deputy chairman of the India's Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, said on Tuesday the government would have to raise domestic petroleum retail prices in line with the global oil prices.
He said it would help keep inflation low was not a good idea.
The government is yet to raise prices of petrol and diesel despite global oil prices hitting record highs in recent weeks.
India imports 70 per cent of its oil needs.
