Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc's Hawaiian branch have been accused by Paragon Metals Inc, for dumping mercury into an overflowing Oahu landfill.
As per report, Paragon Metals Inc filed a federal lawsuit against Schnitzer, claiming it dumped recyclable metal in the Waimanalo Gulch Landfill despite pocketing city refunds for not doing so.
Now Paragon is asking for a court injunction against Schnitzer to halt alleged dumping of auto residue, claiming Schnitzer does it to save money.
Paragon said that Schnitzer Steel Hawaii Corporation shreds about 50,000 autos a year, with the average vehicle containing about three vials of mercury. But Schnitzer has reported recovering only 152 vials of the toxic substance so far this year.
