Venture Production, the North Sea oil producer, said efforts to locate the source of a possible oil leak on one of its largest platforms were being hampered by bad weather.
Production on the Kittiwake platform, which produces some 16,000 barrels of oil a day, has been suspended since Thursday after about 1,500 litres of oil was spotted in the sea nearby.
Venture's share of production of Kittiwake is 50 per cent, meaning it is losing 8,000 barrels a day. Its shares dropped 33.25p yesterday to 401.25p.
Despite sub-surface testing on the central North Sea platform, Venture has not been able to establish the source of the oil, which could have been discharged by a passing ship. A spokesman for Venture said the company would have to wait until the weather cleared to find out if there was a leak on the platform.
