Norwegian oil and gas group StatoilHydro has made a small gas discovery in the Norwegian Sea, the Norwegian petroleum directorate said on Thursday.
StatoilHydro is the operator of production licence 218, where the well was drilled.
The well is located southeast of the Luva gas discovery and 280 kilometres northwest of Sandnessjoen, it said.
"Further evaluation is needed to determine whether the discovery is commercially viable," the directorate said in a statement. The well will now be permanently plugged and abandoned.
StatoilHydro holds a 75 percent stake in the licence, ConocoPhillips 10 percent and ExxonMobil holds a 15 percent stake in the licence.
