The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) apologises for incorrect use of images

After Statoil chose to lodge a complaint against NRK with the Norwegian Press Complaints Commission (PCC) for using images of opencast mining in a story about Statoil’s oil sands operations NRK has now apologised for incorrect use of images.

NRK Rogaland issued the following on-air apology in NRK1 on Friday 31 August at 18:40:

“On 14 May this year NRK Rogaland broadcast a TV report about Statoil’s oil sands production in Canada. Illustrating the report we showed images, e.g., of opencast mining at facilities which do not belong to Statoil. Statoil does not produce oil sands through mining and using these images in such a context was therefore incorrect and contrary to NRK’s code of ethics, based, e.g., on the principle of caution. NRK apologises.”

The apology means that the case has been solved between the parties and will not be discussed by PCC. NRK has also announced that they will review their archives in order to mark images and films from oil sands production better, preventing incorrect use of images in the future.
