‘Orenburgneft’ OJSC (part of the ТNК-ВР Group of Companies) together with Weatherford, a leading global oilfield service company, have successfully completed a pilot project to deploy a motorized steerable system (MSS), which will make it possible to increase drilling efficiency in wells with complex trajectories by 15%.
20 million rubles have been invested into the project. ТNК-ВР consistently implements the strategy of applying new engineering solutions to raise the drilling efficiency and ensure acceptable project economics. The standard equipment does not provide adequate efficiency while drilling extended-reach complex wells.
ТNК-ВР and Weatherford introduced a unique MotarySteerable System (MSS) at Shirokodolskoye, Garshinskoye, Morgunovskoye fields in the Orenburg region, which made it possible to
reduce well construction time by 10-15% and significantly lower drilling risks. Expenses associated with using the MSS in complex wells are comparable to conventional well construction expenses. In 2013
ТNК-ВР plans to extend this technology application to the fields on Yamal and in Eastern Siberia.

The MotarySteerable System (MSS) designed by Weatherford is unique among steerable systems in that it utilises a conventional mud motor and an LWD tool to control the wellpath by automatically controlling the bit RPM.
