Petrobras Confirms 40-Liter Oil Leak at Offshore Platform

Brazilian state-run energy giant Petroleo Brasileiro, or Petrobras, confirmed Monday that it has restarted crude oil production at an offshore platform that leaked about 40 liters of oil over the weekend.

A slick containing about 30 liters of oil was spotted Saturday near the Pampo platform in the offshore Campos Basin, followed by a the discovery of a smaller slick of about 10 liters on Sunday, Petrobras said. The slicks were dispersed by ships sent to the area to contain and clean up the spill, Petrobras added.

Production at the platform, about 113 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, was temporarily interrupted as a precautionary measure, Petrobras said.

No further oil slicks were seen Monday, and production at the platform was re-established, the company said. "The cause of the spill is being analyzed," Petrobras said in an email.
