An oil spill has hit the Gulf of Thailand following a leakage at an offshore pipeline operated by Thailand's PTT pcl's subsidiary PTT Global Chemical (PGC).
The 16-inch offshore crude oil pipeline began leaking at 0700 hours (local time) July 27 at a single-point mooring, about 12.4 miles (20 kilometers) southeast of Map Ta phut port in Rayong, Thailand, according to The Nation newspaper.
About 314 barrels (50,000 liters) of crude oil leaked into the sea and one-tenth of that washed up on the beach at Ao Phrao on the tourist resort of Samet Island. At least 300 Thai naval personnel are currently helping in the clean-up effort on the polluted parts of the island, the Bangkok Post said.
PTTGC has also requested Singapore-based Oil Spill Response Limited for help in containing the oil slick. OSRL confirmed in a phone conversation with Rigzone that it is presently assisting PTTGC on the matter.
