Ukraine faces energy crisis and increase a share of nuclear energy to 60%

Ukraine faces a energy crisis if a blockade on rebel held territory is not lifted.

Activists have cut off the country’s coal supply in the separatist-held area of Donbass.

And the authorities have warned that the move could deprive millions of heating and electricity as well as costing billions of dollars.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the blocking of the railway coal link to the east of the country was a destabilising factor.

Ukraine’s energy industry relies on coal mined in separatist-held territory.

Kiev continued to buy coal from areas controlled by separatists as power stations in Ukraine are mostly designed to run on the specific type of coal that is produced there.

Activists want this to stop as they claim it only fills the pocket of rich oilgarchs and fuels further conflict.

President of Ukraine Petr Poroshenko on February 16, 2017, announced: «I am pleased to inform that we have increased the share of nuclear energy in the overall energy balance. From 47% we are rapidly approaching 60%. This is millions of tons of coal Ukraine no longer needs»

Ukrainian Energy and Coal industry minister Igor Nasalyk said on February 17, 2017, that there are not so many suitable options and Ukraine will consider a possibility of purchasing coal from South Africa, China and Australia.
