US Officials celebrates the 1st shipment of coal to Ukraine

On August 21, 2017, the U.S. Department of Energy and Commerce, XCoal all celebrated the 1st shipment of Pennsylvania thermal coal to Ukraine.

A delegation that included Energy and Commerce department officials held a meeting at the Port of Baltimore Monday with Ukrainian Ambassador Valeriy Chaly and U.S. coal executives from XCoal, the Pennsylvania mining company that secured the deal with the country's utility.

«This shipment will boost both of our country's economies by supporting jobs in the coal and transportation industries,» said Energy Secretary Rick Perry.

«The department and this administration look forward to making available even more of our abundant natural resources to allies like Ukraine in the future to promote their own energy security through diversity of supply and source.»

Perry said the 700,000 tons coal shipment will offer a «secure and reliable energy source» for Ukraine's national utility, Centrenergo, and its electricity customers.

Ukraine's utility signed a deal last month to buy U.S. coal from Pennsylvania soon after President Trump met with Ukrainian President Poroshenko in June.

The shipment will depart the coal terminal in Baltimore later this week and arrive in Ukraine in September, the Energy Department said.

Trump has made energy exports a primary focus of his pro-growth «Energy Dominance» agenda that looks to increase production of fossil fuels.
