Malaysia to boost use of renewable energy

Malaysian authorities said Thursday they will intensify the use of renewable energy, including palm oil, to generate power for the Southeast Asian country's needs.

Energy, Communications and Multimedia Minister Leo Moggie said that small power generation plants across Malaysia which utilise renewable energy may now apply to sell electricity to the nation's power grid.

He said renewable energy electricity producers would be given a license to sell electricity for 21 years through the country's distribution grid system.

"This is in line with the government's decision to intensify the development of renewable energy as the fifth fuel resource under the country's fuel diversification policy," Moggie told reporters.

He said the government has identified renewable energy as, among others, biogas, municipal waste, solar, hydro and wind
