The state oil company in Ecuador, Petroecuador, says a landslide after several days of torrential rain has ruptured its main oil pipeline about 50 kilometres east of the capital, Quito.
The company said the pumping and transport of crude oil from the Amazon region had been suspended.
The accident comes three days after the government approved the construction of a second oil pipeline which will pass through a protected forest, despite protests by environmentalists.
Oil is Ecuador's main export, and accounts for about forty-per cent of state income.
