A tanker exploded and sank in the Arabian Sea, killing at least three crew members, the coast guard said Wednesday.
Two more crew members were missing, and 37 were rescued by merchant ships Tuesday, said Sanatan Jena, deputy commandant of the Indian coast guard. He said the captain of the tanker Heng San waited a day before disclosing that three people died in the explosion.
The captain told officials the explosion 444 miles off Mangalore on India's western coast was probably caused by gas trapped in empty tanks.
The Singapore-owned tanker completely sank in the choppy seas, Jena said. The Indian coast guard said there was no threat of pollution since the tanker was empty and headed to the United Arab Emirates from Singapore to take on a cargo of crude.
