Baku, August 22, 2001. The first anniversary of death of the Azeri ex-president Abulfaz Elchibey caused clashes between the Azeri opposition and police.
CNA correspondent in Baku informs that about 03:00 pm by local time police blocked the way from the home of the former leader of National Front to his grave. This procession was not sanctioned by the executive power of Baku. About 20 participants of the action were detained for resisting police.
Abulfaz Elchibey was the founder of the National Front of Azerbaijan. He was elected the head of the state in June of 1992. In a year he had to leave Baku for Nakhichevan autonomous republic, because of anti-governmental revolt headed by Colonel Sureta Useynov, who participated in formation of administration of the incumbent President Heydar Aliyev.
