The Aflao Police at the weekend arrested three men at Penyi on the Ghana-Togo border for attempting to smuggle 150 litres of petrol to Togo.
They are Joseph Avegah, 41, Kwame Kudakpo, 27 and Agbeko Atigah, 23, all of Penyi, near Dzodze in the Ketu District.
A Police source told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that there were reports of increased smuggling activities along that portion of the border and Chief Inspector Frimpong Manso, in-charge of Aflao Station, led a group of Policemen to verify the reports.
The source said on reaching the border, the Police spotted Avegah, Kudakpo and Atigah carrying 50 litres of petrol each in plastic containers and arrested them.
Avegah pleaded guilty to attempted smuggling when he appeared before an Aflao circuit court on Monday and was fined one million cedis or in default oneyear's imprisonment.
Kudakpo and Atigah, who pleaded not guilty, have been remanded in prison custody to reappear on October 1.
