Algeria is now experiencing the greatest flood in the last 20 years. According to official data, about 340 people have drowned already. However authorities admit that the figure is much greater, for there is no data from distant regions.
Rains began on Friday. The capital of the state - the city of Algeria has suffered most of all. Here the flood has taken the lives of 224 people, 60 of whom lived in the same area - Bab-el-Qued. Several quarters have been destroyed in the city, electricity posts are tumbled down, roads are flooded. About 5 thousand families remained without accomodation. Full-scale salvage operations are carried out in the country. Incessant downpours hinder the works.
According to meteorologists, the weather won't improve until Wednesday.
The last large disaster occurred on the coastal territories in October, 2000.
